Las Pumas Animal Refuge
Las Pumas Animal Refuge Las Pumas Animal Refuge, or
El Centro de Rescate Las Pumas is a must see if you are traveling through the town of Cañas. It also makes a nice day trip from the Papagayo beaches as you can easily stop off there if you are doing a river float on the Corobici River.

If you are coming from Liberia, Las Pumas is located on the Pan-American Highway just before you get to Cañas.

The Las Pumas Animal Refuge was founded by Swiss couple Lilly Bodmer Giger and her husband Werner Hagnauer Asclerauhand more than 40 years ago. They started rehabilitating animals including all the feline species found in Costa Rica. Most of the animals in the refuge are victims of poaching, or who have been wounded in some other way. The animals' enclosures are large and filled with vegetation as to mimic their natural habitat. It is a great opportunity to see the wild life of Costa Rica up close including cougars, jaguars, toucans, grey fox, white face monkeys, howler monkeys, etc.

The center is funded solely by visitors' donations, so a small donation is collected upon entering the facility.
