The food and drink options in the Papagayo area in Costa Rica offer something for everyone. Over the years more and more restaurants, cafes, and beach clubs have opened with varied cuisines, beverages, and themes. There are many bars to check out in the Papagayo area as well which offer diverse music types and drink menus. Grocery shopping in the area is pleasant now that there are five different options to choose from.
Eating out in the Papagayo area is a fun and unique experience. There are so many places to choose from that it makes it hard to decide where to eat on each day of the vacation. Of course it is easy to find local Costa Rican cuisine and fresh fish prepared al ajillo (cooked in garlic and butter), but there are some unexpected cuisines that may come as a surprise. The Italian restaurants in the area are as authentic as they can get. There has been a large influx of Italians moving to the Papagayo area and luckily a lot of them decided to open restaurants. Another surprise is that some of the best sushi is served in Playas del Coco. Alejandro has been rolling up delicious sushi rolls at various venues over the past four years and now he is found working at Papagayo Sushi, which is right next to Papagayo Seafood.
Beach clubs make great places to enjoy a meal as well. Cafe de Playa and the Pacifico Beach club, both in Playas del Coco, offer tempting lunch menus and gourmet dinner options. The oceanfront location of each isn't too bad either. Pictured above is the Cheese Board at the Pacifico Beach Club at sunset.
There is no shortage of bars in the Papagayo area. It isn't hard to find a great happy hour, and the party mentality of the Papagayo beach towns makes this time of day a fun and social event. When night falls head to the three different bars right in downtown Coco. Lizard Lounge and Zi Lounge pump reggae hits, salsa, electronic, and hip hop. Zouk Santana is more laid back with its Rasta managers spinning reggae roots (Bob Marley type reggae). For live bands and a classic rock mix, heading over to beach front La Vida Loca (Jimbo's) is the way to go. They have featured very popular blues bands there such as Down Child on a regular basis.
Grocery shopping can now all be done right in Playas del Coco. Before, most people were heading to Liberia for the cheaper prices, but now that discount super markets have opened so save the gas for a fun excursion! Mega Super is the cheapest in Coco and is found in the Colonial shopping center. Auto Mercado is the nicest and most expensive, but you can't beat the selections, freshness, and quality of food.
