Information and tips about the currency of Costa Rica:
The name of the money used in Costa Rica is the Colón (singular) Colónes (plural). The Colón is named after Christopher Columbus who is known in Spanish as Cristóbal Colón. In 1896 the Colón became the official currency of Costa Rica and replaced the peso.
The US dollar is the second currency of Costa Rica. In many stores and places of business US dollars are often accepted, however, often times at a lower exchange rate than in the bank. For example, if the exchange rate is 1 US Dollar = 566 Colónes, the grocery store may exchange the US Dollar at 500 Colónes. This is a loss to you of $2.33 per every $20! Many businesses do offer a more acurate Costa Rica currency exchange (closer the the bank's), but this is just to make a point.
Wait to change money in the local banks when you arrive as you will receive a much better exchange rate than in your home country.
The ATMs at Banco San Jose and Scotia Bank accept international cards and this is a good way to get Colónes. It will allow you to pull from your dollar account and give you Colónes at a good exchange rate.
